When your ballot arrives (any day now!), voters in Mukilteo School District will have the chance to "Vote YES for Kids" and approve a Capital Bond of $240 million for space additions, building system replacements, and security improvements throughout the district - including major renovations at Mukilteo Elementary. All of the schools in Mukilteo School District (including ME!) are at or over capacity, with a projected increase of 900 students joining our district in the next six years. Unfortunately, there is no available land within our district large enough to build a new school. As Principal Jack Sackett explained, Mukilteo Elementary was built in 1981 for just over 400 students, but now serves over 600 students, including 500 neighborhood students and another nearly 100 students transported from throughout the district who participate in two specialized learning programs housed at ME. This bond would provide funding for the first phase of a total renovation at ME. Because planning is still in conceptual phases, there are no architectural or specific plans yet but the POTENTIAL project components proposed are:
Throughout the district, the bond would also provide roofing, flooring, heating and ventilation improvements at 13 schools, including the Kamiak Performing Arts Center, which is a well-utilized asset in our school and local community. 14 schools would also receive field and tennis court replacements. Every school in the district would benefit from district-wide technology infrastructure improvements and would receive security system upgrades including:
The total bond proposal of $240 million would increase local tax rates by only 9.4 cents per $1,000 of Assessed Property Value. For a house valued at $500,000, that would be an increase of only $47 per year.
Voters need to approve the capital bond with a 60% super majority, so ME PTSA is asking you to vote YES for kids to keep our schools safe and keep up with enrollment. Learn more about the bond and specific projects at the Mukilteo School District's Capital Bond page. If you haven't been able to attend any of the informational presentations, you can review that material here. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]! You can champion this cause, too! Just go to yes4mukilteokids.org to find out how to share on Facebook, request your own yard sign, or sign up for a shift to wave signs! Here are some questions that have been asked at previous presentations: Q: Will the addition of a multi-purpose room along with a new gym accommodate a longer seated lunch time? A: Yes! Having a dedicated gym for specialist time AND a dedicated space for lunch would help to accommodate a longer seated lunch. The district is prioritizing multi-purpose rooms at all elementary schools. Q: How would phase one be implemented with students on campus? A: A new building would be completed while still allowing use of existing facilities. Q: When would phase two happen? A: Bonds are on a six year cycle, so phase two would be incorporated in the bond on the 2026 ballot. Voters would have to approve that as well. Q: If the bond advisory committee identified more need, why is the district not asking for more money, as other cities are? A: Other cities have higher tax rates than Mukilteo, and are able to accommodate a higher amount. This $240 million ask would keep our tax rates stable, and we know that is important to our citizens and more likely to pass. Comments are closed.
